H is for heaping.  As in heaping portions of EMOTION.  For fiction writers this is a valuable tool, one that helps the reader connect with the characters.  It's the arch enemy of flat.  The counter to boring.  Most importantly, it's a window to the soul.  So bring it on.  Dish it out.
The use of emotion is also important because it allows the writer to show us (yes...yes...yes) rather than tell us (no...no...no).  For example, if your character is red lining, don't just tell us she's mad.  Describe her tomato red face, or the sound of her field hockey trophy hitting the closet door, or the blanket of feathers that covers the room from the pillow she just tore open.  Those types of descriptions are powerful, not to mention way more interesting.  They paint a picture that lets the reader feel what your character is feeling.  The result?
Those are the characters we remember.
Those are the books we love.

So next time you're creating a character, be sure they show some emotion...and don't be afraid to let them throw a few things around.
